You will see so many of the same concepts and techniques, just different names and some differences in the way the techs. are done. Overall one of the best and most complete systems Ive seen. If you can go to a seminar and watch David James, you will be impressed by his techs. and his philosophy of what works. Dont judege the man till youve either learned from him or fought him. This is another one of the more practical systems like Kenpo that do work.

To the point of the three steps to control an opponent, I'd like to point out that IMHO our controlling of height, width and depth are three much more universally practicable steps to achieve control.

The VAJ method to go for sight, breathing and balance are in a lot of situations not possile, i.e. when an attacker is bend over to grab you, you can't reach his eyes nor his throat (or plexus) so the first two steps are not practicable.

There is however no situation thinkable where you can't gain control over his height, width and depth (in any order) to achieve the complete disability for the attacker to attack again.

Just my thoughts, still a very inspring video clip, great intensity and most of what he said made sense.

James, is there any way that you can post the English translations of the techniques?

Cool Site. Thanks for putting it up, whoever...

My take on this (you already read this on KN, Mr. Hawkins, so nothing new, but I hope to come here for better discussions - KN pretty much sucks).

This topic has some good points, and whatever level of academic achievement we parallel with belt level is largely irrelevant (though, I'm more in the camp of 1st Black = High school diploma, myself).

The key word here is "academic". Consider three arenas of kenpo (indeed, martial arts in general). You have the academics, you have the sportsmen, and you have the pugilists. Most are some combination of at least two (kenpo is puglism at its finest in my opinion, but that doesn't make necessarily make us pugilists - kenpo is one of the more academic of martial pursuits there are).

The pugilist side of things ascribes to an entirely different set of comparisons, if we must make any. The reason being that a PhD from an accredited university will hold his own in his own field of expertise. But in martial arts, there are only so many "fields" of study, but arguably it centers on a single platform - pugilism, fighting, protection from violence, warfare, or whatever you want to call it. And in this common arena there are many many second graders that can snuff out a line of PhDs.

Academia has its place, and recognize these comparisons and largely academic anyway. But if we are to make any suitable analogies, we need a different set for describing the martial human. I'm not offering any suggesions (but am all ears) just offering my take on the topic presented.

Cheers,
